In its eighth issue of 2020 to be published on 16 April, Qiushi Journal carries an important article entitled "Solidarity and Cooperation are the Most Powerful Weapons for the International Community to Defeat COVID-19" by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission. The article has the following messages:
Mankind is a community with a shared future. To defeat a disease that threatens all, solidarity and cooperation are the most powerful weapons. Currently, COVID-19 is breaking out in various parts of the world, posing a grave threat to people's lives and health and a formidable challenge to global public health security. At such a moment, it is imperative for the international community to strengthen confidence, make a collective response in solidarity, and comprehensively step up international cooperation to enable humanity to win the battle against this serious infectious disease. With solidarity and mutual assistance, humanity will prevail over this outbreak and embrace a brighter future!
Viruses respect no borders and epidemics do not distinguish between races. No country could stay immune to the viruses or fight them alone. The only way to defeat them is through concerted efforts of all. In the age of economic globalization, it won't be the last time that we experience a serious emergency like this one. Mankind will continue to be tested by various traditional and non-traditional security challenges. This global public health crisis has driven home the urgency and importance of building a community with a shared future for mankind. Only with solidarity, coordination and cooperation can the international community defeat the outbreak and protect the common home of humanity.
Guided by the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, the Chinese government has acted in an open, transparent and responsible manner. We have provided timely updates to the World Health Organization (WHO) and relevant countries and regions, released the genome sequencing of the virus at the earliest opportunity, shared control and treatment experience with WHO and the rest of the world without reservation, and actively engaged in international cooperation to jointly meet this common threat and challenge. We are resolved to protect the lives and health of the Chinese and other people across the world.
True friendship could stand the test of adversity. China appreciates the valuable understanding and support from the international community. At the most difficult moment in our fight against the outbreak, China received assistance and help from a lot of members of the global community. Such expressions of friendship will always be remembered and cherished by the Chinese people. The Chinese are a grateful people who always reciprocate kindness. China has been supporting the global response to COVID-19 as its ability permits and working with others to uphold global public health security.
Ensuring public health security is a common challenge for mankind, and severe infectious diseases are an enemy of all. In response, countries need to come together to comprehensively step up international cooperation and foster greater synergy. China will work with WHO and the rest of the international community to safeguard public health security at the regional and global levels. Efforts should be made on four fronts: first, resolutely fight an all-out global war against the outbreak; second, forge a collective response of control and treatment at the international level; third, support international organizations in playing active roles; and fourth, strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination.
China's response to the outbreak is swift, decisive and effective. It has made enormous sacrifice in battling the virus. The Chinese strength, spirit and efficiency demonstrated by the Chinese people and China's role as a responsible major country have been highly commended by the international community. It is a widely shared view that while taking comprehensive and forceful measures to control the outbreak at home, China has actively engaged in cooperation and information-sharing with WHO and the world, speedily shared the complete genome sequences of certain virus strains, and developed fast testing kits. This represents not only China's commitment to the safety and health of its own people but also a contribution to the cause of global public health.
