2020-02-28

On 28 February, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio.

Wang Yi noted that many countries are fighting to contain the COVID-19 outbreak. The virus is a common enemy of humanity and requires a collective response from the international community.

Wang Yi thanked Italy for the friendship and support of its people across social sectors extended to China in the wake of the outbreak. This will always be remembered by the Chinese people. Being at the forefront of the fight against the epidemic, China has made tremendous efforts in response to the epidemic and the situation across the country is now under effective control. The mission of WHO to China highly recognized China's approach after its visit to China. It is of the view that China's nationwide mobilization and unprecedented measures have not only brought the epidemic under control in China, but also prevented a massive spread of the virus worldwide. Such efforts provide useful experience for the global response. China can and will defeat the epidemic at an early date.

Wang Yi noted that recently the outbreak has hit northern Italy. We in China feels deeply for the Italian people and offer our sincere sympathies. China is ready to provide help as it can according to Italy's needs. It also stands ready to increase professional discussions, collaborate on telemedicine, drug and vaccine research and development, and share epidemic containment experience and technologies. China also hopes that the joint fight against this outbreak will help strengthen unity among China and the partner countries of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and move toward our shared goal of building a health Silk Road.

Di Maio thanked China for its sympathies and support for Italy's effort to control the outbreak. He said it fully shows the traditional friendship between the two peoples. The international community should join hands, step up cooperation and rise to the challenge together. Di Maio briefed Wang on Italy's response effort, noting that the Italian government is taking strong measures to battle the spread of the disease, and stands ready to strengthen communication and cooperation with China, and share information closely between the health departments. Italy values and supports the BRI. In this trying time, partner countries should tide over the challenge together through greater unity and cooperation.
