2020-02-19

On February 19, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand in Vientiane, Laos.

Wang Yi said that China and Thailand are one family. Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the royal family, the government and people from all walks of life in Thailand have offered help to China, which speak volumes of the special ties between our peoples. In particular, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, through a specially made video, he personally expressed his support and sent his best wishes to China, specifically to Wuhan. China appreciates that Thailand has followed the recommendations of WHO and taken moderate and sensible measures to respond to the outbreak. As a saying goes, "a friend in need is a friend indeed." We believe that after the epidemic, the interactions of our peoples will be ever closer and our traditional friendship more profound.

Wang Yi gave a briefing on the progress China has made in fighting the outbreak. He said that China and ASEAN countries share not only borders but also the same future. Both sides showed support for each other during the Asian financial crisis, the outbreak of SARS and tsunami. At this critical moment, our support for the ASEAN-China Special Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the novel coronavirus disease demonstrates our solidarity and determination to overcome difficulties. The Special Foreign Ministers' Meeting tomorrow will surely be a success and will contribute to public health in the region.

Don Pramudwinai said that first, he would like to send his best wishes to Wuhan. Thailand and China have always given each other understanding and support. It is a timely decision to hold a special foreign ministers' meeting at a critical moment and discuss joint responses to the epidemic. This meeting is of great significance as it is the first multi-lateral ministerial meeting ever held with a focus on public health. It is a relief to see the positive progress China has made. Don Pramudwinai also noted that infected patients in Thailand are in recovery. The epidemic is a common challenge for countries in the region. He believed positive results will be made in the meeting tomorrow, which will enrich and strengthen the solidarity and cooperation between ASEAN and China, and contribute to public health in the region and beyond.
