|Director of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Office Yang Jiechi Speaks to UK Cabinet Secretary and National Security Adviser on the Phone|
Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, spoke to Mark Sedwill, Cabinet Secretary and National Security Adviser of the United Kingdom (UK), on the phone Tuesday evening.
Yang updated Sedwill on China's ongoing fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak. Under the personal direction of President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government sees epidemic control as a first-order priority out of responsibility for the life, safety and health of its citizens. It is also making great efforts to protect the health of those outside China, thus contributing to global public health security. The government has the confidence and capability to defeat the epidemic. China appreciates the support and help provided by the world community. WHO has repeatedly advised against and opposed travel or trade restrictions. China asks the UK to recognize and support the epidemic-control efforts taken by China, respect the professional recommendations given by WHO, and protect UK-China collaboration and interactions from undue impact.
Sedwill noted the UK's full acknowledgement of China's tremendous efforts and effective measures to bring the outbreak under control. The UK has sought to maintain a calm and measured approach. It recognizes that given the low case fatality rate, it is critically important not to unsettle the public. The UK stands ready to strengthen cooperation with China and provide whatever support it can.
