|Wang Yi: Actively Promote the Building of China-Japan Relations That Fit the Needs of the New Era|
On the afternoon of November 25, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi of Japan met the press after holding talks in Tokyo.
Wang Yi said, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and I have in-depth and practical talks, and we reached extensive consensus.
We believed that China and Japan have entered a new era respectively and bilateral relations are faced with rare opportunities for development. The two sides should implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, bear in mind the overall long-term interests and actively promote the building of China-Japan relations that fit the needs of the new era.
We believed that thanks to the guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-Japan relations are improving and developing continuously at present. On the basis of the four political documents between China and Japan, the two sides should strengthen positive interaction and translate our willingness to improve and develop relations into actions of all sectors of society as soon as possible.
We believed that President Xi Jinping's scheduled state visit to Japan next spring upon invitation is of milestone significance. The Japanese side once again warmly welcomes it. The two sides agreed to continue making joint efforts to create favorable conditions and a sound atmosphere for the realization of this important visit.
We believed that we need to pursue win-win cooperation of higher quality and deepen cooperation in key areas such as scientific and technological innovation, third-party markets, energy conservation and environmental protection. We should enhance security mutual trust and build a constructive security relationship. We should manage differences, properly handle sensitive issues and avoid interfering with the overall improvement and development of bilateral relations.
We believed that the first meeting of the China-Japan high-level consultation on people-to-people and cultural exchanges held this morning was a complete success. On the basis of acknowledging the achievements in people-to-people and cultural exchanges so far, the two sides reached an important eight-point consensus on how to open up a new era for people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Japan. In particular, the two sides designated the year of 2020 as the "China-Japan Cultural and Sports Exchange Promotion Year," and agreed to extend this momentum to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The two sides also agreed to fully resume and expand two-way study tours, enhance mutual understanding between the youth and push forward the cause of China-Japan friendship.
We believed that in the face of the complex and volatile international situation, China and Japan should strengthen coordination, adhere to multilateralism, uphold the multilateral trading system and support the central role of the United Nations in the contemporary international system.
Wang Yi expressed, China and Japan, as important countries in this region, should work together to advance regional cooperation and sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership at an early date. The Chinese side welcomes Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's attendance at the China-Japan-Republic of Korea (ROK) Leaders' Meeting in China next month to elevate trilateral cooperation to new highs. Both sides agreed to accelerate negotiations on the China-Japan-ROK free trade agreement at the same time to promote the economic integration in Asia.
Both sides also reached consensus on planning counterpart exchanges in 2020 between the two Foreign Ministries.
