Wang Yi: People's Satisfaction Is an Important Criterion for Human Rights

On October 24, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi expounded the Chinese side's stance on human rights while meeting with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Wang Yi said, the Communist Party of China seeks happiness for the Chinese people, and the Chinese government has all along, in accordance with the Constitution, and actively protected and promoted the human rights in China. To judge the human rights of a country, the most important criterion is the satisfaction of its people. China develops rapidly and its people have a stronger sense of fulfillment and happiness. Next year, China will realize eradication of poverty across the country, which will be a miracle of the Chinese civilization spanning 5,000 years and a miracle in the history of human development. China will continue its efforts in focusing wholeheartedly on building the economy and pursuing development, seeking a better life for the Chinese people and further protecting and improving human rights.

Federica Mogherini said, the EU recognizes that different countries have different conditions, and therefore have different practices in protecting and improving human rights. European countries have problems in human rights, too. Having no intention of lecturing other countries on human rights, the EU is willing to carry out human rights exchanges and cooperation with the Chinese side on the basis of mutual respect to jointly promote the global cause of human rights.
