|Wang Yi Attends the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs|
On September 26, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.
Wang Yi expressed, under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the five countries, BRICS cooperation has become increasingly cohesive, with its influence constantly on the rise. It has served as both a stabilizer in international turbulence and an example of a new type of international relations. In the face of unprecedented opportunities and challenges, we should continue the momentum of cooperation, expand areas of cooperation and lift cooperation to a higher level, so as to build a bigger and stronger BRICS. The current priority is to prepare for the BRICS Summit to be held in Brasilia, Brazil in November.
We should continue to advocate multilateralism, take the lead in safeguarding international system with the UN as its core and uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Nations should act in accordance with international law. And international affairs should be coped with through consultation instead of being handled by just one or a few countries. Unilateral sanctions and the so-called "long-arm jurisdiction" have no basis in international law, which are unpopular and futile.
Wang Yi noted, we should jointly promote the political settlement of hotspot issues. Recently, new changes have taken place in major regional hotspot issues in the Gulf region, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Afghanistan. No matter what the problem it is and where it takes place, there is only one right way out, namely, political settlement through dialogue and negotiation. The Chinese side will continue to play a constructive role in maintaining regional peace and stability.
Wang Yi noted, we should strengthen BRICS cooperation on all fronts, advance the three-pillar-driven cooperation in economy, peace and security and people-to-people and cultural exchanges in a balanced way, let our voices be heard on major international and regional issues and send a positive signal in defending international equity and justice. We should reinforce practical cooperation in areas including trade and investment facilitation, digital economy and local currency settlement. We should seize the opportunity brought by the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, speed up cooperation projects such as the "Innovation BRICS" network, carry out extensive "BRICS Plus" cooperation and expand the circle of friends of BRICS.
Extending congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs said, under the current international situation, BRICS countries should further strengthen strategic communication, deepen practical cooperation as well as enhance coordination and cooperation under various frameworks including the UN and the Group of 20, so as to contribute to the improvement of global governance. In particular, we should uphold multilateralism, defend international law and rules, and resolve differences and disputes through political and diplomatic means. All sides pledged to continue to make concerted efforts to support Brazil in hosting a successful BRICS Summit and ensuring the positive outcome of the meeting.
All sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
