|Wang Yi Meets with Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres|
On September 26, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York.
António Guterres said, the world today is at a critical moment. As the general debate of this session of the General Assembly has shown, two tendencies are emerging in the world: one is the adherence to multilateralism and international law, and the other is the rise of unilateralism and protectionism. China is playing a critical role in building a multipolar world. The UN thanks the Chinese government for its strong support for and sound cooperation with the UN and appreciates China's important contributions to the international poverty alleviation, combating climate change as well as building the Belt and Road Initiative in an environmentally friendly way. The UN hopes to continue deepening cooperation with China in maintaining peace, security and sustainable development, and expects that China continues playing a leading role in climate change and other fields.
Wang Yi said, multipolarization is an inevitable trend. Every country in the world has the right to develop. Multipolarization needs to be achieved through multilateralism, which is symbolized by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China supports the UN in playing an active role, backs UN Secretary-General's work and supports adhering to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. The participation in the general debate of this session of the General Assembly is to convey the following message: China firmly stands on the side of multilateralism and the UN, and the right side of history. Multilateralism represents the future while unilateralism is unsustainable. History cannot go back to the days when the law of the jungle prevailed. As next year will mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN, the Chinese side is willing to take it as an opportunity to further enhance cooperation with the UN to jointly create a better future for the world.
